Miss Universe Flub reportedly rigged according to insider

Seasons greetings everyone!

People Liking People is coming out of retirement to report on an amusing event that has all the ingredients we look for in a story - fame, fortune, and embarrassment. And now we can add one more ingredient to the list - shenanigans. I'm sure you all have heard about what happened during the 2015 Miss Universe pageant where Steve Harvey slipped up and read that the winner was Miss Columbia, only to correct himself that Miss Colombia is actually the first runner up, and the real winner is Miss Philippines. The result was pure awkwardness as Miss Columbia stood there for a couple of minutes wearing the crown before it was taken off and placed on Miss Philippines instead. Even though the event was days ago, spectators are still bickering about how it went down, and some Colombians are still holding on to the idea that their beloved Miss Colombia retains the title. Among the chaos stands a respectful Miss Philippines, who has done all she could to remain above the fray and carry herself with dignity.

We now have a new angle to the story: An industry insider has just come out and states that the slip-up was actually staged in order to garner publicity for the franchise.

If you're going to pull something off like this, you gotta do it right. For the most part, we do think it went well enough to get the conversations stirring, but did you guys forget to pay someone? Why is this insider spilling the beans if he supposedly worked for the organization?

It certainly raises more questions than answers, but we'll definitely be staying tuned to see where this goes next. If this is staged, then who should hold the crown? Should they do it over again?

Have a happy holidays!

Girls kicked out of school after racist rant goes viral on Youtube: What happened to free speech?

From The Huffington Post:

After two minors from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Fla., posted a nearly 14-minute-long racist rant on YouTube, the girls are "no longer students at the school."

Watch the video for yourself here:

You may not like what they were saying, but what happened to free speech? For the most part they were simply speaking their opinion about the racial makeup and differences at their school. Maybe their assessment was entirely incorrect but maybe it was the truth. At the end of the day it's their viewpoint and they're entirely entitled to that viewpoint. We should defend all speech no matter how much it differs from our own views or offends us.

Apologies have now been issued by the girls:

"I am one of the girls who were in the racist video that got posted. I’m writing this so that I can tell people how truly sorry I am. I could never, in a million years, have pictured this happening with me involved. I wasn’t raised to hate people for their race, and I still don’t. I made a horrible decision in being a part of this video ... "

It has been reported that the girls received several death threats and now had to have police protection.

Does nobody else have a problem with this? We have to put fear into people and beat into submission the people we disagree with and force them to apologize? It's complete bullshit. No one should ever have to apologize for their opinions. If you have a certain perspective or way of looking at things, as long as that's your honest opinion why is that something to be ashamed of? For all we know her school really could be full of a bunch of kids who don't give a shit about their future and that's what she was reacting to. Instead of pointing our finger at someone talking about a problem, why not look to see what she's talking about? She just might have a point.

By the way, take a look at this line from the apology letter:

I know people are wanting to blame the parents for this, for our opinions and what we said, but I want it known that I wasn’t raised how I portrayed myself in that video. My parents never taught me hate or to judge someone like that. I honestly don’t know where that came from, but it was wrong no matter what.

You don't know where it came from? Oh I don't know, it could be that you experienced things and formed an opinion on them and then voiced that opinion?

Have a spine. How embarrassing for someone to have to pretend they don't have a viewpoint or feel shame in holding it. If that's what you really feel, then stand by it. Maybe the way you voiced it was in bad taste, but if there is a real problem going on in that school then that concern needs to be raised.

Merry Christmas to all

Merry Christmas to all from People Liking People!

We were hoping for a white Christmas but it has sure been a strange winter so far, it's in the mid 40s today for most of the midwest, while it actually snowed in some places in Texas today.

Speaking of the weather, you've got to check out these Weathergirls, we just can't get enough of them! Here's today's weather report:

Woman throws flour all over her furniture and blames it on her kids to make viral video

Wow, the length that some people will go to these days to "go viral" is getting more ridiculous by the day. So we have a woman who has thrown flour all over her living room, getting it on the couches, lampshades and picture frames. She then pretends to stumble upon her kids playing with an empty bag of flour and puts on her best acting job at being shocked and dismayed. Watch the video below:

Is what we've become people? All attention whores looking to be the next winner of the viral lottery? The woman, who goes by "mtmuzic" uploaded the video to youtube with the description:

Mommy was not feeling well and had to stay in the bathroom longer than usual during which my two boys, ages 1 and 3 took my new bag of flour out of the cupboard and destroyed my house. This is from ONE 5lb bag. Don't believe me? Hand a full bag to a 3 year old and see what happens.
Yeah sure lady, that must have been some major diarrhea shit you had going on there. So far the video has 2.3 million views so I suppose the woman can chalk this one up as a success, but isn't a bit weird for a mother to be using her kids like this?

She has since disabled the comments on the video (big surprise) but we were able to catch one left by "brunozi" who hit the nail right on the head:

"You should go see a psychiatrist, lady. You poured flour all over your own house just to make a YouTube video? Seriously, go see a doctor. I feel sorry for your kids having such a distraught mom."
Update: A friend of People Liking People has informed us that the woman is Mary Thompson, an amateur musician from Steubenville, Ohio. Her e-mail addresses are mtmuzic@yahoo.com and happilynapoli@yahoo.com, phone #s are 330-618-6211, 330-655-5438, and 586-246-7341.

Update 2: Thompson is her maiden name, she's now married to WADL Detroit TV employee Vince Napoli (phone # 440-835-0991) and assumes the name Mary Napoli. They now live in St. Claire Shores, Michigan. The family appeared on the Today show with Matt Lauer where she answered to accusations that it was a hoax just to get her 15 minutes of fame. This is looking to be very similar to the balloon boy hoax. Fortunately in this situation it hasn't wasted police resources, the only thing lost here is the Napoli's dignity.

Update 3: Vince Napoli threatens to fire us from the internet for posting his phone numbers, most of which were already public on his own websites. See the comments below and read more here.

Republicans supporting "Stop Online Piracy Act"

Hey Republicans, what happened to all the "less government" talk? If you really mean that, we're with you. But time and time again it seems that you pick and choose your ideology depending on the issue.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) was introduced in the House of Representatives on October 26 by Texas Republican Lamar Smith. The bill's aim is to fight intellectual property infringement online but it puts a huge burden on domain owners and gives the government power to force Internet Service Providers to blacklist domain addresses.

For example, let's say there's a picture hosting website in Japan called japan-pic-host.com which allows users all over the world to post pictures to share with their family and friends. And let's say that 1 member of the site (out of millions) submits a picture of a diagram that is copyrighted by someone else. If this bill were to become law, the government would then be able to force Internet Services Providers like Time Warner, AT&T, & Comcast to prevent people from visiting the entire website altogether. If you tried to visit japan-pic-host.com to check out your friend's latest photos, you'd get an error message on your browser.

The same could easily happen to sites like Youtube. With the millions of user-submitted videos on there, the government could easily find an example of copyright infringement - all the justification it would need to shut the whole thing down.

From Wikipedia:

The bill would allow the court to order Internet service providers, “payment network providers,” search engines, and advertising services to take “technically feasible and reasonable measures” to cut off these illegal foreign infringing sites in their respective fields. Internet service providers would be required to modify their DNS look-up servers to return an empty response for these sites, making them virtually inaccessible, while search engines would need to filter results linking to such sites.
-
The remaining provisions of Title I allow for voluntary actions to deny services to rogue sites and to sites selling prescription medication without requiring a prescription or where the drugs are adulterated or misbranded.
-
The bill would require internet service providers to filter DNS queries of offending websites, rendering them unresolvable.

Are there bad things on the internet? Sure. Does copyright infringement take place online? Yes. But we must ask ourselves, is it worth regulating the internet and giving the government more power just to go after a couple copyright infringers? Don't we already have processes in place for copyright owners to go after those who infringe? Why do we need to hand over additional blanket controls to the government? The government should not ever be able to force an internet service provider to block an entire website. If the government has a legitimate beef with a copyright infringer then it needs to deal directly with that person.

Internet Service providers should not have to be put in a position to police their customers or deny access to particular websites. Isn't this what sets us apart from countries like China? We all seem to agree that it's a bad thing when the Chinese government cuts off access to certain websites. So why are we voluntarily headed down that road ourselves? A few cases of copyright infringement isn't enough justification to give the government that much power, just as the fear of terrorism isn't enough justification for us to give up our rights in order to feel safe. And in both instances it's the supposed "less government" Republicans leading the way.

Currently the Stop Online Piracy Act is supported by these representatives:

Lamar Smith [R-TX]
Howard Berman [D-CA]
Marsha Blackburn [R-TN]
Mary Bono Mack [R-CA]
Steve Chabot [R-OH]
John Conyers [D-MI]
Ted Deutch [D-FL]
Elton Gallegly [R-CA]
Bob Goodlatte [R-VA]
Timothy Griffin [R-AR]
Dennis A. Ross [R-FL]
Adam Schiff [D-CA]
Lee Terry [R-NE]

Youtube's Recommended Channels: WTF?

RussiaToday, Old Spice and Alex Jones? Really guys? Anyone else keep seeing these same channels being recommended? I can't think of one reason why anyone would be interested in an Old Spice deodorant Youtube channel. I've been seeing this one for months actually. Either Old Spice paid Youtube some big money to be prominently displayed as a recommended channel, or Youtube is trying to tell me something about my personal hygiene.

And Russia Today....at the bottom it says these recommendations are based on my watch history, shared videos, and other channel subscriptions. I can't think of anything I've been watching lately that has anything remotely to do with Russia, though perhaps I could use one of those Russian mail order brides. Alex Jones, I'm crazy enough as it is I don't need any more help, thanks.

Fight at Denny's Caught on Video

The video:

This happened at a Denny's in Chicopee, Mass. this past Sunday, Feb 20.

Here's the police report obtained by The Smoking Gun.

We're told that the altercation started long before these folks were inside Denny's. Apparently while in route to Denny's one car was cut off by the other and tempers continued to flare once they got inside. We're not exactly sure who's at fault here or really who to cheer for, so if anyone out there has the low down on this story please leave a comment below. The police report redacted the names of everyone involved, but we would like to know the names so if you are one of the people involved or you know who it was, let us know!

What we see here is a small group sitting down eating, 2 gals and a guy. The guy and girl that approach the table appear to be the aggressors. The guy standing starts taking shots at the guy sitting, then his woman gets involved and she ends up taking shots at the 2 gals. We don't know the full story here of what went down, but it appears to us that the aggressors are intellectually inferior and lost the argument they were having, but they didn't want to just leave looking like idiots so their only recourse to save face was to start getting physical. So at this point we're siding with the 2 gals and guy that were sitting down eating. We'd really like to know the names of the aggressors, the man and the woman, so again if anyone has any information...names, addresses...etc let us know! Let's shame the trash.

One thing that has us very concerned though is this little tidbit:

While investigators have identified each pugilist seen in the YouTube video, a Chicopee Police spokesperson said that for someone to be charged with simple assault and battery the attack must occur in the presence of a police officer.

We've never been to Chicopee, Massachusetts so we really don't know how things operate down there. But if this policy is true, it has to be one of the dumbest things we've heard in a long time. Apparently in Chicopee you can just go up and beat the shit out of whoever you want and as long as you don't do it in front of a police offer, you get off scott free. Is it really that backwards down there? Or is the Chicopee Police spokesperson a fucking retard that doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground? Anyone from Chicopee reading this? Let us know what the hell is going on in your town.

Turbotax Marketing Disaster

Wow this is really pathetic and sad. The tax preparation software company Turbotax is using washed up never-have-beens to promote their brand on Youtube. I was just checking some videos on youtube this morning when I see this ad in the top right corner:

Tay Zonday? That guy's still around trying to make a buck? Alright you can't blame a guy for trying to squeeze out every ounce of coin from his fame, I'd do the same. I guess what's more shocking is that companies are still paying him money to promote their brand as if he were a legitimate pop icon with the power to persuade the masses. And talk about a confused message. What the hell does Tay Zonday have to do with doing your taxes?

So I click on the ad and it takes me to a music video of Tay Zonday singing about Turbotax in a song called "Freeloader Nation". Oh apparently there is some sort of contest...something about rapping about how great Turbotax is and wait a minute, what the fuck is that Vanilla Ice? Oh God.

If Tay Zonday and Vanilla Ice together don't spell PR disaster, I don't know what will. Whoever thought up this idea should be canned immediately. And poor Vanilla Ice, how degrading. Look at this silly hat they made him wear:

What follows is the winning video by some guy calling himself cpulfer, and a phone call made to him by Vanilla Ice himself letting him know he had won. The prize was $25,000. I wonder how much they paid Ice, Tay, and Youtube. This is just sad all around.

By the way, most people don't even need to bother with these tax programs. You can easily file online through the IRS's website. They offer a service called Free File Fillable Forms where you can fill out the necessary forms yourself online and submit them for free.

Youtube will no longer let you download videos with third party applications

Youtube just introduced a new feature: Youtube entertainers will now be able to offer their videos for download at a small price. The ones we've seen were 99 cents. This is great news to a lot of people who always wanted to keep a copy for themselves. But a lot of people out there were using third party services such as Keepvid, Ripzor.com, Vixy.net, Ripmyvideos.com, VideoDownloader, Ripvideo.net, Savevideodownload.com, and Kickyoutube.com to download videos from Youtube for free.

Well this is now a thing of the past. Youtube has just disabled downloading videos, even for those using those sneaky programs and plugins. Try using Keepvid to download your favorite Youtube video. It won't work. You'll save a file that's completely empty. If you want to download a Youtube video you'll have to find one that has a download link.

So is this a good decision or not? Well it's obviously good for people who want to protect and control their own content, which most producers of content do. But there are a lot of others out there who want their videos to be distributed around, like activists trying to get the word out about a particular cause. Or people working together collaborating, sharing their videos, and editing them. Also, if someone is trying to illustrate a point, it's helpful sometimes to display several small clips to support their argument. Youtube is full of news and commentary clips. We understand that people who work hard to create content shouldn't have it stolen, but there are a lot of good legitimate reasons for people wanting their own copy.

With Youtube's new feature of offering the video to download, I've only seen examples where it's being sold. Will Youtube also allow people to have their videos available to download for free? We hope so, and if not, we hope they're seriously considering it.

Cat Abuser Found and Arrested

We here at People Liking People are known for our love for all types of people. But what may come as a surprise to many of you is that we also have a deep love for cats. Recently, we stumbled on a story about two teenagers from Lawton, Oklahoma who filmed themselves torturing their cat Dusty and posting it on youtube. The angry internet mob went after the kids with a vengeance, and alerted their local media and police. Fortunately this story has a happy ending, as the two teenagers were arrested and Dusty is now going to be placed in a good home.

Kudos to KSWO Channel 7 in Lawton, OK for staying on this story. Not all of the details have been released because the cat abuser is a minor, but our sources tell us his name is Kenny Glenn. We try to like all people here at People Liking People, but this may be one time we have to make an exception.
